Bighorn had its world premiere in General Custer's hometown of Monroe, Michigan, during their 12th Annual Custer Week. Mayor Robert E. Clark and the citizens of Monroe graciously hosted a filmmaker reception at the Monroe County Historical Museum among the world's foremost collection of Custer artifacts. Everyone then moved over to the River Raisin Centre for the Arts where the premiere of the classic Custer film They Died With Their Boots On starring Erroll Flynn took place in 1941. The theater was packed with an enthusiastic crowd with many people wearing 1876 period clothing. Steve Charpie, leader of the LA-based New Custer Brass Band who has recorded Felix Vinatieri's original music using his actual cornet, performed the national anthem followed by the screening of Bighorn. The audience reaction to the film was electric. This was followed by a Q-and-A with writer/director Alfred Thomas Catalfo and Mr. Charpie, who performed a rousing version of the 7th Cavalry's marching song "Garry Owen" that factors prominently in the film. A second screening was added to accommodate everyone.
One week later, Bighorn had it's hometown premiere on opening night of the New Hampshire Film Festival before a packed house at The Music Hall in Portsmouth.
